Take Advantage of Corporate Matching Programs

According to Double the Donation, a platform to help nonprofits maximize charitable donations through matching gifts, 65% of Fortune 500 companies offer matching gift programs and 91% match donations dollar-for-dollar. This has a direct correlation to why employees say they’re more likely to give and give more when their employer matches the donation.

For nonprofit organizations, matching gifts represent a powerful opportunity to boost fundraising and hit ambitious goals. Here’s how to make the most of it.

Why Matching Gifts Matter

Matching gifts  aren’t just a perk, they’re a multiplier. When donors know their contribution can be doubled, they’re more motivated to give generously. Yet billions of dollars in matching funds go unclaimed every year. The key is proactive outreach and smart systems.

Be Proactive

Most matching programs are managed by human resource departments. Employees typically submit a matching gift form, and the company sends the match directly to the nonprofit organization. While many businesses match a 1:1 ratio, some offer a percentage match, and others set restrictions on eligible nonprofit organizations.

  • Research local employers that offer matching programs. Check annual reports, company websites, or contact human resources,  public relations, or community relations teams.
  • Create a comprehensive list and share it on your donation page.
  • Remind donors in every appeal to check if their employer matches gifts.
  • If a company has a foundation, its matching program may run through that entity — so include those in your outreach.

Use Technology

Matching gift software  may simplify the process for both donors and nonprofits. Investing in automation can save time and increase revenue. Such automation includes:

  • Helping donors to confirm if their employer offers a match.
  • Automating submission of matching gift paperwork after a donation.
  • Identify eligible gifts so you don’t miss opportunities.

Create Your Own Matching Pool

If corporate matches are slow to come in, consider building your own.

  • Ask board members or major donors to match gifts during a campaign or event.
  • Offer matches for specific groups (e.g., new donors) or timeframes.
  • Partner with charitable foundations that match gifts to kick-start campaigns.

These strategies create urgency and excitement and can be easier to arrange than securing a corporate match.

Educate Donors

Educate your donors, staff, and board by promoting matching programs, and follow up if matches don’t come through. Persistence pays off, and every match brings you closer to your mission.
