Sara Dayton Named Lumsden McCormick’s New Managing Partner

Lumsden McCormick is pleased to announce the appointment of Sara M. Dayton, CPA, to managing partner effective January 1, 2023. Sara will be the first female managing partner in the history of the Firm.

She succeeds John Schiavone who held the role since 2010.

As managing partner, Sara will carry out the policies and objectives adopted by the Firm's executive committee. She will oversee the management and profitability of the Firm and is responsible for implementing and monitoring actions to achieve the Firm's strategic and future vision. She will also be responsible for monitoring developments in the accounting profession and business environment to determine relevance to the Firm and its market leadership position.

Sara has been with Lumsden McCormick her entire professional career starting as a staff accountant upon graduating from SUNY Geneseo in 1998; she was named partner in 2012. She currently leads the Firm’s auditing and accounting department and is the leader of the governmental services group. She has extensive experience serving governmental entities and commercial entities in the areas of internal and external auditing, single audits, taxation, information returns, and financial reporting. In 2014, Sara became a Financial Advisor having passed the Series 7 and 66 exams, as such she is a referring representative for Lumsden & McCormick Financial Services, LLC.

Sara is a good standing member with the leading global accounting associations including the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants, the New York State Society of Certified Public Accountants (NYSSCPA), the Government Finance Officers’ Association (GFOA), and the Institute of Internal Auditors (IIA). Sara is involved with the NYSSCPA on the state level serving on the Public Schools Accounting Committee and is on the GFOA Western Chapter Advisory Committee. She is also a member of the New York State Association of Counties and the Association of School Business Officials, Western New York Chapter, and the Institute of Internal Auditors.

Active in the community, Sara serves as Board Treasurer with the SPCA Serving Erie County, where she shares her deep passion for animals, especially those in need of rescuing. Sara has served as a board member since 2009, including serving as Board President from 2015-2018. Sara is also Board Treasurer with the Buffalo-Erie Marathon Association and a board member with Cradle Beach Camp. In addition to the SPCA, Sara volunteers her time and talents with Joyful Rescues, an animal rescue group in Cuba, New York from which she adopted her first dog. She also volunteers at certain events for South Line Fire District, where her husband, Andy Dayton, serves as Chief.

Transitioning from the role of managing partner, John Schiavone will continue to serve as an audit partner. He has been with Lumsden McCormick for over 30 years. Under his direction, the Firm has continually earned the highest distinction available from the AICPA National Peer Review Committee and relocated to and renovated its corporate headquarters in the historic Cyclorama Building. He led the Firm through considerable growth and during his tenure the Firm has received numerous recognitions, including Top 100 Accounting Firms to Work For by Accounting Today, Top Workplace in Western New York, Best Places to Work, Diamond Eagle Award by 1st Global, and most recently the 2022 Great Place to Work Certification™ and the Fortune 2022 Best Workplaces in Consulting & Professional Services.
