John P. Schiavone, CPA
Thank you for visiting our website. I have the honor and privilege of serving as managing partner of this outstanding professional services firm. When Charles Lumsden and Richard McCormick set out to create a new accounting firm in the vibrant community of Buffalo, New York, their cornerstone embodied the essence of quality client service. More than sixty years later, that philosophy remains the core value of our firm and is practiced daily by every one of our associates. Some of our early clients remain clients of our firm today, albeit a few generations removed. As you click through our specialties and services, feel free to reach out to me with questions about our firm or our approach to quality service.
I have practiced my passion - public accounting - for over 30 years and I have been very fortunate to experience virtually every facet of service that this profession provides. In my early years, I learned the art of auditing with one of the largest CPA firms and touched some very large international corporations. When I moved back to Buffalo, I further honed my skills by working on many manufacturing companies with local ownership and provided ancillary services including audits of employee benefit plans. I learned a lot about purchase accounting and deferred taxes. Being a smaller office of one of “the Big 8," I cut my teeth on a few not-for-profit engagements as well.
With this experience I was ready to embark on the next stage of my career when I joined the accounting firm of Lathan, Lumsden, McCormick and Company, our name in the late 80’s. My experience and my desire for the technical side of our profession provided me the opportunity to use those skills in assisting my “new” clients with implementing accounting standards; an art that I practice and enjoy today. Although the size of our firm’s clients may not have been to the magnitude of what I was accustomed, the reward of dealing with and assisting clients one-on-one was immeasurable. I gained valuable experiences with a variety of clients, from performing peer reviews of other CPA firms and assisting those firms in developing auditing documentation systems, to personal and corporate tax returns, of which I had not previously been exposed. Throughout the 90’s, I managed our office in Lockport, New York; there were no niches back then. I worked on clients such as agricultural cooperatives, petroleum distribution and convenient stores, manufacturing entities, closely-held private companies, school districts, community colleges, not-for-profit entities, individuals, and governmental organizations. Today I am best known for my school district, governmental and higher education experience, but I continue to serve many of the clients that were my day one assignments at LM.
Managing a firm of quality professionals and staff is my day to day responsibility. I have a great support team of directors that assist me with firm administration, marketing, human resources, business development, and technology. Providing the vision for our firm, the strategic agenda to achieve that vision, and motivating my partners and professional associates is my greatest role.
I live the notion that it is important to give back to our profession and community. I remain active with many professional organizations, including the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants, Government Accounting and Auditing Committee of the New York State Society of Certified Public Accountants, Association of School Business Officials WNY Chapter, National Association of College and University Business Officers Local Chapter and the Government Finance Officers’ Association. I also assist a group of managing partners in our BDO Alliance USA of firms similar in size to LM, meeting two times a year to share experiences, challenges and opportunities.
I am currently a board member of the Erie Community College Foundation and also have held leadership positions with the Erie County Audit Committee, Eastern Niagara Chamber of Commerce, Niagara USA Chamber, the Town and Country Club of Lockport, and Rotary Club of Lockport. I am a proud graduate of Duquesne University.
